Trapani is the chief town of the province and it attracts a lot of tourists and visitors during the Holy week: on occasion of it you can assist at the most important of the processions, that one of Trapani’s “Misteri”. The procession begins in the Holy Friday afternoon and it lasts until Saturday morning, crossing over all the streets of the city. Places to visit in Trapani are: San Lorenzo Cathedral (XVII cent.), Annunziata Sanctuary, Pepoli Museum, College Church (XVII cent.), the famous salt-mines and the characteristic windmills.
Trapani’s Salt-Mines Reserve
From time immemorial, Trapani is linked to the salt industry. It seems that the Phoenicians indeed made the salt and trade with it, but we have safe sources of salt mines only by descriptions of Arabian geographer Idrisi, in 1154. During the centuries, in fact, the salt industry came until us through different events; besides the salt, it produced also the area of the salt mines, a non-natural environment, but well-integrated with the nature around.
The process of salt mining is not pollutant (“engines” that let sea-water steam are the sun and the wind), and there are no wastes of pollutant production (water from which salt crystallized is saved and reused the year after; even the crystallization pools’ bottom, made with salt and mud, the “mammacaura”, was used to impermeabilize the bottom and the dykes). Salt-mines area is a particular ecologic cubby, in which one can practice pisciculture and in which beings loving oversalted areas grow, besides every kind of birds.
Segesta.
This is a very interesting touristic-archaeological area. It is an ancient Elimian town; nowadays it is visited for its ruins: the impressive Doric Temple and the Greek Theatre, used every year for theatrical events of every kind.
Egadi Islands
Favignana, tamed by S. Caterina mountain, greets the visitor with the royalty of Florio Tuna-Fishing net, an example of industrial archaeology, and the elegance of Florio Palace’s liberty style.
It enthralls with its sea’s clearness and its creeks’ silence. Red Creek, Light-Blue Creek, Perciata Cave.
Levanzo is an island rich of archaeological proofs in its sea beds. You can discover its ancient origin in the Genoese Cave, looking at the neolithic pictures up to 5.000 years ago.
Marettimo closes the triangle: it the farthest and the wildest island, with its wonderful caves, its mountain paths, it offers the visitor the chance to have a symbiotic relationship with it.
San Vito lo Capo
It is a lively town whose main activity is tourism, thanks to its beaches and its climate, its uncontaminated sea, its sprigged little streets, its fresh fish and to its famous “couscous”, a typical Arabian dish.

It has been the first Natural Reserve founded in Sicily. This wonderful reserve unravels along about 7 km of wonderful and uncontaminated coast, starting from Castellamare’s gulf until San Vito lo Capo. It is a reserve rich of very rare plants and of faunistic diversity, unusual to find in any other side of the island.
Scopello
It is an ancient and characteristic mariner burg, famous for the great abundance of tuna fishes in its sea. It is the seat of the ancient Tuna-Fishing net, by now disused, but reason of a big touristic attraction. It is noteworthy a magnificent court in which during summer time, besides musical events, one can admire also a little centre dedicated to art of making pottery.
Mothia Island
Mothia Island was once an important freight and military depot. This island is the biggest island of the little archipelago of Stagnone Islands.
Places to visit here are without fail Archaeological Museum Whitaker, that preserves the most important collection of Phoenician-Punic handmades of Sicily, and archaeological excavations with fortified walls, whose remains are by now clearly observable.
Marsala
It was known in the XVII century for the homonym liqueur wine and nowadays it’s famous for its several wine-producing cooperative stores open to visitors; it is an ancient Carthaginian naval stronghold. Marsala is also famous for Garibaldi’s landing in 1860. You have to visit the Norman Cathedral, dedicated to St. Thomas of Canterbury and the recovered and rebuilt Punic ship.
Selinunte
It is a formidable touristic-archaeological destination. In past time it was one of the most powerful Sicilian cities and it was the most western greek colony. During the war it suffered a terrible defeat by the rival Segesta, that nearly deleted it from geographical maps; after the Romans destroyed it completely. It was rediscovered in the XVI century by a Dominican and came to light in the XIX cent.
